Safe and Sound Protocol

What is the safe and sound protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening therapy based on Polyvagal Theory that teaches our nervous system to feel safe and calm through a bottom-up process of training the vagus nerve.

What should you know about the SSP?

    • You will to specially processed music (filtered to emphasize certain frequencies).

    • Sessions are typically around 30-60 minutes, listening can take days or weeks.

    • The listening can happen with a therapist or at under self-administration.

    • The protocol is typically progressive, starting with short listening durations and increasing over time.

  • The vagus nerve, especially its ventral branch, plays a key role in social connection and calming. SSP works by stimulating the vagus nerve, helping to reduce the physiological state of threat.

The SSP uses specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve, helping to shift the nervous system from a defensive state (fight/flight/freeze) into a more regulated, socially engaged state.

The music used in SSP is processed to emphasize certain frequencies, particularly those of the human voice, to help the brain better detect cues of safety in the environment.

  • SSP is used with children and adults experiencing:

    • Trauma/PTSD

    • Anxiety

    • Autism Spectrum Disorders

    • ADHD

    • Selective mutism

    • Social or emotional difficulties

    • Sensory Processing Disorder

  • It’s important to understand that it is possible that some symptoms may temporarily worsen before improving, especially if the nervous system becomes overwhelmed.

Our goal is to respond to these concerns quickly by responding, pausing or slowing the process when needed to keep it gentle and safe.

Often, the SSP is delivered too quickly, especially by providers who haven’t worked with complex clinical issues. During these times, clients can be left dysregulated or unsupported when things got hard.

With our team, you’re not just getting SSP—you’re getting a supported listening experience with a clinician who is an expert in trauma, and ongoing support through your journey.

Committing to staying in touch with us throughout the listening process is key in order to keep either process as gentle as possible, and to allow for best possible improvements.

  •  Choosing the Right Time to Begin

Ideally, SSP or RRP should be started when you (or your child) are not already at your limit. If you’re facing major stressors or upcoming events that could be overwhelming, it might be either best to wait for those events to pass, or we may be able to proceed with a plan to take special care.

It is always wise to discuss timing with me if you’re unsure.

SSP and RRP are most effective when the nervous system feels safe. If there is significant conflict at home, or someone in the household feels threatening or destabilizing to the listener, SSP or RRP may be less effective. Please reach out if you’re unsure whether SSP is the right next step right now, or if you’d like guidance on where to start instead.

Whenever possible, choose a time when you can slow down a little—just in case the process gets bumpy and you need space to integrate.

    🦷 Medical & Safety Considerations

Please avoid starting SSP or RRP if:

         •     You are about to undergo invasive dental work (e.g., root canal or extraction)
         •     You’ve had a recent head injury
         •     You have a seizure disorder and have not been seizure-free for at least one year

If you have any significant medical issues or a history of bipolar depression, please let me know in advance so I can arrange a medical consult if needed.

Program options and pricing

  • Self-Serve

In the self-serve model you will meet with our team for an initial session to learn more about your nervous system and build skills for self-regulation. After your intake session, you will have one shared listening session to review co-regulation strategies and set a schedule and pace for listening. After determining the schedule, you will have a follow up session during hour 3 of listening and at the conclusion of hour 5. On weeks where you don’t meet with your therapist for a session, you will exchange check in e-mails to ensure you have sufficient support.

    Total- $580 +weekly support e-mails.

*Estimate dependent on each person’s individual program.

  • Supported

In the supported program our team will walk with you through your listening. We will help you learn about your nervous system and build skills for regulation. During listening sessions, we support with co-regulation and debriefing any listening sessions. At the completion of the program, you and your therapist will have a final session to discuss the process and any necessary next steps.

$100- Listening access fee (3 month access)

    $120- Initial Intake session

Kelsey Fursman
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

My name is Kelsey and I am a registered psychotherapist (qualifying) dedicated to helping individuals reach their fullest potential. I am here to offer you a safe place where your thoughts and feelings will be respected and valued. When we work through the SSP Program we will start by mapping your nervous system, understanding what prompts activation and dysregulation. Together, we will identify signs of regulation and strategies to co-regulate. As you walk through listening to the 5 hours of music, I will be there to check in, confirm you are making progress without experiencing too much dysregulation.

Reaching out for help is the first courageous step toward healing. Book a session with me today and let’s walk together on your journey towards self-betterment.
